Tasting Notes

Wine with a saturated cherry color and a ruby hue at the edge. The aroma is elegant, revealing a complex bouquet of notes: ripe red fruits, toasted bread, and spices, along with aromatic plants, hints of leather, and balsamic tones. Elegant and fleshy, rounded and medium-bodied wine, with good acidity and pronounced tannins. The aftertaste is long and persistent.

Background

La Granja is a special estate located at the foot of the Sierra de Tolonja mountains on a territory spanning 150 hectares. The vineyards here grow at an altitude of over 600 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking views of Rioja from the property. Geographically, it is situated between the historic regions of two Riojas - Alavesa and Alta.

Remelluri is a village whose first records date back to the early 10th century. Wine has been produced on these lands for over 1000 years, and evidence of this can be found in the stone presses from those times. The old estate in this village was sold to Telmo Rodriguez's father, Jaime Rodriguez Solis, in 1966, and the first harvest was gathered under Jaime's guidance in 1971. Since then, Remelluri has set a high standard for quality in Rioja.

The winery gained wider recognition when it began producing wines under the direction of Jaime's son, Telmo Rodriguez. Production at La Granja under his control is entirely organic and biodynamic.

At one point, Jaime, Telmo's father, used to source fruits sourced from local producers. This didn't quite align with Telmo's production principles, as he aimed for all stages to be conducted in one place—from grape growing to bottling. However, he decided not to sever ties with local producers, as that would deprive them of income, but to establish a newbrand named 'Lindes de Remelluri, crafted from grapes of small producers who grow them in villages near the winery. These wines have a more rustic style.

Production process

Remelluri Reserva wines are flagship for the estate, aiming to express the local terroir and weather conditions unique to each vintage. The grapes for GR are harvested from the best elevated vineyard sites with the oldest vines. The blend includes Tempranillo variety - approximately 86-90%, Garnacha - 5-12%, and Graciano - 2-5%. Depending on the vintage, the composition may be adjusted slightly.

A large portion of the Garnacha variety is harvested from a vineyard planted over a hundred years ago at an altitude of 750 meters at the foot of the mountain. Aging takes place in barrels of French and American oak for 27 months, and then the wine is further aged in the bottle for some time. It is produced in limited batches from the very best harvest.
