Tasting Notes

This well-aged wine offers a layered flavor profile. Spicy oak introduces the experience, then unfolds with hints of dill, dried fruit, cinnamon, tobacco, and finishes with a delicate touch of plum and dark chocolate.

Background

Born in 1852, Marqués de Murrieta isn't just a winery, it's a cornerstone of Rioja's story. Don Luciano Murrieta, the founding father, not only pioneered Rioja wines but also shipped them across the globe, making them a hit in Mexico and Cuba. Today, the historic Ygay Castle, now a museum (since 2019!), serves as their headquarters, a testament to their enduring legacy. Owned by the Cebrián-Sagarriga family since 1983, Marqués de Murrieta seamlessly blends tradition with cutting-edge advancements, expanding their vineyards with modern technology. They're a winery that honors its roots while embracing progress, ensuring their legacy of exceptional wines continues to flourish.

Production Process

Hand-picked grapes from the prestigious Ygay Estate in Rioja Alta begin their transformation. First, they soak up color and flavor in stainless steel tanks for a short dance with the skins. Then, they slumber in American oak barrels, some brand new, for over a year, acquiring hints of spice and vanilla. Finally, after at least a year of bottle aging, they're ready to impress.
