Tasting Notes
This wine is a mix of fresh and sophisticated flavors. It pours a beautiful cherry red color. On the nose, you'll get a burst of ripe berries – both black and red – along with hints of vanilla and licorice. The taste is smooth and full-bodied, with layers of those same berries plus some toasty oak, tobacco, and a touch of minerality.
Background
Merum Priorati, part of the Pere Ventura Family Wine Estates group, is deeply rooted in the agricultural and wine history of the Tarragona region. They craft award-winning wines using meticulous methods on Priorat's challenging slopes. Their El Cel 2016 even earned a coveted 97-point rating from Decanter, showcasing their expertise. The family's influence extends beyond Priorat, with wineries in the prestigious Cava and Penedès regions.
Production Process
This wine starts with meticulous hand-picking of the grapes. After removing the stems, the grapes are carefully pressed using a horizontal pneumatic press. Fermentation happens in stainless steel tanks with precise temperature control. To add complexity, the wine spends 8 to 12 months aging in French oak barrels.
