Tasting Notes

This wine shows off a beautiful, clear garnet color. On the nose, it is filled with aromas of dark and red berries, mingling with earthy tones and a touch of spice. The first sip is dry and refreshing, with lively acidity. Flavors of berries and spice continue on the palate, well-balanced and full-bodied. Hints of bitterness and characteristic green notes from the Graciano grape add complexity, while underlying minerality lingers on the long finish.

Background

In 2007, three brothers – Xabier, Iñaki, and Mikel Sanz – embarked on a passionate project: building a winery devoted to Garnacha grapes. They meticulously planted over 52 hectares of vines, not just Garnacha, but also its relatives Mazuelo, White Garnacha, and even Chardonnay. This endeavor was not merely about planting; it was an exploration. Taking over the historic Corella winery, now named Zorzal, they began their journey, experimenting with the guidance of renowned winemaker Jorge Navascues. Over time, collaborations with other respected figures like Matías Michelini, Fredi Torres, and Daniel Niepoort further enriched their wines. The numerous awards their creations have garnered speak volumes about their dedication and skill.

Production process

This wine, a single varietal Graciano, comes from 37-year-old vines in Ombatillo vineyards, Corella. They hand-pick grapes in 8kg crates and ferment them in 500-liter French oak barrels with natural yeasts. After malolactic fermentation to soften acidity, it ages for a year in 300-liter French oak barrels. They gently clarify and filter it, preserving its natural character.
