Tasting Notes
Deep cherry-red, almost inky, with purple hues. The aroma is filled with notes of ripe fruits - both red and black currants - accompanied by enticing vanilla, cocoa, and pastry. Hints of toasted oak blend with cloves and walnuts, creating a complex and appealing bouquet. The first sip is fruity, revealing a smooth, fleshy texture that is surprisingly elegant and easy to perceive.
Background
Founded in 2002, Bodegas Alto Moncayo quickly carved out its niche in Campo de Borja, focusing on Garnacha. They advocated for this grape variety and protected some of the region's most historic vineyards. Despite increased production, they remained true to their roots, focusing on creating high-quality wines with distinctive character, typically in limited batches.
In 2003, a challenging harvest led to the creation of Veratón—a lighter Garnacha with a shorter aging period. This accessible wine is aimed at a broad audience, yet Veratón still embodies Alto Moncayo's commitment to quality and tradition.
Production Process
The grapes are harvested from vines aged between 30 and 50 years. Once the grapes reach peak ripeness, they undergo a meticulous selection process before fermenting at low temperatures in small stainless steel tanks. Finally, Veratón is aged for 16 months in a mix of French and American oak barrels, adding further complexity to the wine.
