Tasting Notes
Selección Especial presents a deep, inky color. Its enticing aroma is filled with red fruits - blackcurrant, raspberry, cherry - interwoven with intriguing herbal notes, menthol, and a hint of creaminess. The taste is smooth, surprisingly fresh, and extremely drinkable, thanks to well-integrated tannins. A long, aromatic finish completes this truly pleasant experience.
Background
Winemaking at Abadía Retuerta dates back centuries. Grapevines have been present here since Roman times, and by the 12th century, monks in the Duero Valley were already cultivating grapes and honing their craft. The estate's reputation flourished, and by the 17th century, it was mentioned for its leading role in the wine trade of Valladolid. Despite challenges such as land confiscation and the phylloxera epidemic, the estate endured it. In 1988, a new chapter began with the acquisition of the estate by Sandoz, which revitalized the vineyards and established a modern winemaking facility in 1996. Today, their prestigious DO certification is a testament to centuries of commitment to quality winemaking and sustainable farming practices.
Production Process
Selección Especial from Abadía Retuerta is their masterpiece. Crafted from carefully selected grapes from 54 of the best vineyards, and predominantly featuring Tempranillo complemented by other estate grape varieties. This blend ensures a consistent character year after year while preserving the subtle nuances of each harvest. The wine undergoes separate fermentation before spending 24 months in French oak barrels, resulting in a beautifully balanced taste and texture.
