Viña Couqueta is an outstanding Rioja Alavesa wine produced by Bodegas Remírez de Ganuza. Named after the La Coqueta vineyard located near Samaniego, its grapes benefit from the specific position and elevation of the plot, resulting in a peculiar level of ripeness. This wine has a lively ruby-red color and fragrances reminiscent of forest fruits and sweet spices. The profile is well-rounded, accompanied by a velvety texture and a lingering aftertaste. Meticulously crafted with a blend of tradition and innovation, it pairs flawlessly with cheeses, meats, and hearty dishes.

Tasting Notes

This wine has a vibrant ruby-red color with hints of cherry and maroon. Its aroma is a mix of licorice, currant, forest fruits, toasted notes, and sweet spices, with a touch of smoke. The taste is rich with fruitiness, well-balanced with oak and acidity, providing a smooth texture and a satisfying, lingering finish.

Background

Bodegas Remírez de Ganuza was founded in 1990 by Fernando Remírez de Ganuza, a bold and adventurous visionary who began as an entrepreneur before becoming a winemaker. He acquired plots of land and consolidated them into farms, which he later sold. Through this process, he identified the finest vineyards, selecting 27 exceptional hectares in Samaniego and kept it for himself, thus establishing the winery. A true innovator, the winery pioneered techniques such as selection tables and cold chambers, strengthening its reputation for quality.

Situated in an ideal location in Rioja Alavesa, famous for its exceptional terroir, the winery benefits from the region's Mediterranean climate and chalky clay soils, which provide ideal conditions for cultivating grapes that produce rich, complex wines. Bodegas Remírez de Ganuza's commitment to quality extends beyond grape selection to the winemaking process itself, employing minimal intervention techniques that allow the grapes to express their unique character.

Production process

The process begins with carefully selecting grapes by hand from vineyards with an average age of 45 years. These grapes are then transported in 12kg boxes and placed in a specially designed cooling chamber for 24 hours at temperatures ranging from 4 to 6 degrees Celsius before fermentation. After this initial cooling period, a second selection of grapes takes place on tables, after destemming. Fermentation occurs in small stainless steel tanks with a capacity of 7,000 liters. Aging lasts for 26 months in new French and American oak barrels.

Pairing Suggestions

Pairs perfectly with cheeses, sausages and dishes with red meat and sauces.

Serving Temperature

It is recommended to serve lightly chilled, at 16°C for a fully opened potential of the taste and smell.
