Tasting Notes

Pour a glass to reveal a deep purple color. On the nose, aromas of violets, dark fruit, and a touch of pepper emerge. The palate offers a balance between intensity and finesse, with notes of ripe blackberries mingling with earthy hints of thyme. Full-bodied with smooth tannins and refreshing acidity, the finish lingers with a pleasant minerality.

Background

Nicknamed "The Flying Scotsman," Norrel Robertson settled in Calatayud to create the El Escocés Volante brand, a tribute to Garnacha. The name is a playful nod to his heritage, but the wines themselves speak volumes about his passion and respect for tradition. Every bottle embodies his dedication to the craft.

Production process

The grapes come from Garnacha vines clinging to high slopes in Aragon. These old, gnarled vines produce tiny yields of intensely flavored fruit. Only the best grapes are hand-selected before a gentle crushing. For aging, the wine spends up to a year in seasoned French oak barrels, some lightly toasted. Before bottling, the wine is blended in underground tanks with the lees stirred back in for extra complexity. This wine pushes the boundaries of the Calatayud region.
