Áster presents a vibrant and balanced style underscored by elegant nuances. Deep ruby in color with a lively pink rim, it offers aromas of juicy raspberries and blueberries complemented by hints of mocha, toffee, and a touch of licorice. The palate is lively and well-structured, supported by refreshing acidity and smooth, enveloping tannins. The finish is lingering and pleasant.
Background
In pursuit of the perfect grape-growing conditions, Áster Winery began scouting prime locations in Ribera del Duero in the late 1980s. They acquired existing vineyards and planted new ones, but they were not content with a hasty launch. After years of meticulous experimentation, the first Áster wines were released in 2000.
Today, Áster is renowned for blending tradition with modern innovation, producing wines that age gracefully. They offer three main selections, each reflecting the distinct character of Ribera del Duero. Their flagship wine, aptly named "Áster," is a classic: intense and full-bodied, with robust tannins and a deep, rich color. Tim Atkin MW ranked Áster among the top 15 wineries in the region for 2022.
Production process
The winemaking process begins with a cool soak before fermentation to extract rich grape flavors, followed by a gentle maceration to enhance the aromatics. After malolactic fermentation, the wine ages for 16 months in a blend of new and used French oak barrels, adding complexity and a smooth character.
