Tasting Notes

The Prado Enea Gran Reserva 2016 has a deep purple hue. Its aroma demonstrates a refined blend of forest berries such as brambles, complemented by hints of warming spices. The texture is smooth, velvety, medium bodied, offering a prolonged and enjoyable aftertaste. This wine embodies a perfect balance between acidity and smooth tannins, marrying fresh fruitiness with a creamy vanilla in a harmonious blend.

Background

The Bodegas Muga’s vineyards are rooted in Rioja Alta's unique climate and chalky/clay soils, where the Muga family has been carefully nurturing and tending to them for several generations. Here, amidst the foothills of the Obarenes Mountains, they craft wines that reflect the terroir's distinct personality. Each grape of Tempranillo, the essence of Rioja wines, Garnacha, and other varieties is hand-harvested, honoring a legacy of craftsmanship dating back to 1932. This harmonious blend of tradition and terroir infuses every bottle with the soul of the winery, capturing the essence of this land.

Today, the Muga family cultivates around 400 hectares of vineyards (both owned and leased). Their winery is housed in a 19th-century mansion with 200 oak vats and 14,000 barrels, one of their distinctive features, distinguishing their wines with a unique flavor. All of this can be seen firsthand, as Bodegas Muga supports wine tourism, offering Espacio Torre Muga - a modern facility housing a tasting room and a multifunctional space.

Their commitment to quality resonates worldwide, especially in the USA, where Muga Reserva and Prado Enea are highly regarded by sommeliers and enjoy a significant presence in the American market. With exports to over 50 countries, including recent ventures into Extremo Oriente, Bodegas Muga continues to captivate wine enthusiasts around the globe.

Production Process

Prado Enea Gran Reserva is meticulously produced from select vineyards in Rioja Alta. Grapes, including Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha and Mazuelo are harvested at peak ripeness for outstanding quality. Natural fermentation occurs in wooden vats, followed by two weeks of maceration. Aging for 36 months in barrels made of French and American oak enhances complexity, with an additional 3 years of bottle aging for elegance. Before bottling, the winery uses traditional egg white-fining. This process ensures depth, longevity, and a storage potential of over 20 years.
